Editorial Style Updates

Notable agreed-upon adjustments

  • Use "Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University" in ALL references. Do not shorten or abbreviate name on first or second references. On third reference, “Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University,” is acceptable. See below for further detail on name use guidance for content with character or word limitations. Note: The proper name will not be preceded by the article "the."
  • EVMS will adopt use of periods with degrees, with the exception of MD and MD-equivalents, including DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) and MBBS (received by students in the UK and Commonwealth countries and considered equivalent to MD).
  • When listing professional honors, credentials and certifications on business cards, EVMS will follow the punctuation standard set by the certifying organization. Ex. FACS for Fellow of the Academy College of Surgeons; APR for Accreditation in Public Relations (Public Relations Society of America); FAHRMM for Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management.
  • EVMS will adopt title capitalization to conform to AP Style (Director of Marketing Jan Smith or Jan Smith, director of marketing).
  • EVMS will adopt the use of “said” for quote attribution.
  • EVMS will adopt AP Style on phone numbers: 212-621-1500. (An exception is that parentheses are used for the area code in phone numbers on letterhead)
  • ODU will adopt capitalization of degree names. (Ex. Master of Science in Reproductive Clinical Science; Master of Applied Science in Anatomical Science; Bachelor of Arts in History).
  • EVMS will continue to include residency/fellowship information in alumni notations (Ex. Francis Counselman, MD (MD '83, Emergency Medicine Residency '86). EVMS will adopt the limit of three credentials with a title, as any more hampers readability.
  • ODU will adopt “healthcare” as one word.

EVMS will move toward using “Department of,” “Office of” and “Division of” in editorial instances but will omit it for official departmental/office logos.

When referencing the buildings associated with Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University and the EVMS School of Health Professions at Old Dominion University, refer to "Old Dominion University’s Eastern Virginia Medical School campus."

Titles
